This popular circular route, covering approximately 55 miles, takes you past four magnificent abbeys and is the perfect way to soak up the rich history and natural beauty of the Scottish Borders.


How long does the 4 Abbeys Cycle Route take?


At 55-miles, the 4 Abbeys Cycle Route can be done in a (tough!) day, but many choose to spread it over a weekend - spending time exploring the abbeys, picturesque border towns and farmers markets dotted along the route. 





What’s the terrain like?


According to Strava, the 4 Abbeys is a moderate cycle route. You’ll mainly spend your time on peaceful, undulating roads, but there are a couple of steep climbs and some unavoidable A roads to bear in mind. This is all worth it as you slice through scenic valleys and soak up the breathtaking views of the famous Eildon Hills. The route is broken into segments, with pit stops at various Borders’ Towns, giving you plenty of opportunities for refreshment along the way. The route is normally done in a clockwise direction.





Historic Abbeys


The route weaves its way through the picturesque towns of Melrose, Dryburgh, Kelso, and Jedburgh, providing a unique opportunity to visit the historic border abbeys in each town.
